In Lampang town center, a couple of minutes walk from the river and it's restaurants. ภาคเหนือ ประกอบด้วย 17 จังหวัด ได้แก่ จังหวัด กำแพงเพชร เชียงราย เชียงใหม่ นครสวรรค์ ตาก น่าน พะเยา พิจิตร พิษณุโลก เพชรบูรณ์ แพร่ แม่ฮ่องสอน ลำปาง ลำพูน สุโขทัย อุตรดิตถ์ และ อุทัยธานี มีพื้นที่รวม 169,644.3 ตารางกิโลเมตร หรือประมาณ 106 ล้านไร่
จากหลักฐานการขุดค้นทางโบราณคดีของกรมศิลปากรและเอกสารอื่น ๆ พอสรุปได้ว่า ในอดีตภาคเหนือแบ่งออกเป็น 2 อาณาจักร กับ 1 แคว้น คือ

1. อาณาจักรโยนก เป็นอาณาจักรที่เกิดก่อนอาณาจักรล้านนา ช่วงเวลาที่ก่อตั้งอาณาจักรไม่ปรากฏแน่ชัด แต่มาสิ้นสุด ในพุทธศตวรรษที่ 17 โดยมีพระเจ้าสิงหนวัติ เป็นผู้ก่อตั้ง มีศูนย์กลางการปกครองอยู่ที่เมืองเชียงแสน (อำเภอเชียงแสน จังหวัดเชียงราย) มีกษัตริย์สืบต่อมาหลายพระองค์ และได้เสียเอกราชให้ขอม ในสมัยพระเจ้าพังคราช ต่อมาพระเจ้า พรหมกอบกู้เอกสารคืนมาได้ และได้สร้างเมืองขึ้นใหม่บริเวณที่แม่น้ำฝางและแม่น้ำกกบรรจบกัน เรียกว่า เมืองไชยปราการ และประทับอยู่จนสิ้นพระชนน์ อาณาจักรโยนกจึงเสื่อมและสิ้นลง

2. อาณาจักรล้านนา หรือ ลานนา พระเจ้าเม็งราย โอรสของพระเจ้าลาวเม็ง กษัตริย์เมืองหิรัญนครเงินยางเป็นผู้ก่อตั้ง ดังข้อความจารึกไว้ที่ฐานอนุสาวรีย์ของ ท่านที่อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดเชียงรายว่า "พ่อขุนเม็งราย ประสูติ พ.ศ.1782 ทิวงคต เมื่อ พ.ศ. 1860 ทรงสร้างเมืองเชียงรายขึ้นเป็นเมืองแรก เมื่อ พ.ศ. 1805 ทรงรวบรวม อาณาจักรล้านนาให้เป็นปึกแผ่น และทรงสร้างความสามัคคีระหว่างชนชาติไทย"

เมื่อทรงครองราชย์ ในปี พ.ศ. 1802 ได้รวมหัวเมืองใกล้เคียงไว้ด้วยกัน ยกเว้นเมืองพะเยา ซึ่งพญางำเมืองครองอยู่ และดินแดนของพ่อขุนรามคำแหงมหาราช โดยกษัตริย์ทั้ง 3 พระองค์ ได้ทรงกระทำสัตยปฏิญาณว่าจะเป็นมิตรไมตรีต่อกัน

พระองค์ทรงสร้างเมืองเชียงราย เมืองฝาง และยึดครองแคว้นหริภุณชัย เมืองลำปาง และได้สร้างเมืองเวียงกุมกาม (อำเภอสารภี จังหวัดเชียงใหม่) จากนั้นจึงทรงสร้างเมืองใหม่ ให้เป็นศูนย์กลางการปกครองแคว้นล้านนาที่ทรงรวบรวมมา ได้บริเวณริมแม่น้ำปิงไปจนถึงดอยสุเทพ ซึ่งเป็นที่ราบอันอุดมสมบูรณ์ และขนานนามว่า "นพบุรีศรีนครพิงค์ เชียงใหม่" เสร็จเรียบร้อยเมื่อ พ.ศ. 1839 (ก่อนกรุงศรีอยุธยา 54 ปี กรุงศรีอยุธยาสร้างเมื่อ พ.ศ.1893) แล้วประทับอยู่ตลอดพระชนม์ชีพ

3. แคว้นหริภุณชัย หรือ ลำพูน ซึ่งอยู่บริเวณลุ่มแม่น้ำปิงและแม่น้ำวัง ทางด้านตะวันตกของเทือกเขาผีปันน้ำ
ลักษณะภูมิประเทศ
ลักษณะภูมิประเทศของภาคเหนือเป็นทิวเขาทอดยาวจากเหนือลงมาใต้ ทิวเขาที่สำคัญได้แก่ ทิวเขาถนนธงชัย เป็นทิว เขาที่ใหญ่และยาวที่สุดของภาคเหนือ มียอดเขาสูงเป็นอันดับหนึ่งของประเทศคือ ยอดเขาดอยอินทนนท์ อยู่ในจังหวัด เชียงใหม่ สูงจากระดับน้ำทะเล 2,565 เมตร ทิวเขาแดนลาวกั้นเขตแดนไทยกับพม่า มียอดเขาสูงเป็นอันดับสองของ ประเทศคือ ยอดดอยผ้าห่มปก อยู่ในอำเภอแม่อาย มีความสูง 2,297.84 เมตร และยอดดอยหลวงเชียงดาว สูง 2,222 เมตร เป็นอันดับ 3 อยู่ในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่เช่นกัน และยังมีทิวเขาขุนตาล ทิวเขาผีปันน้ำตะวันตก ทิวเขานี้อยู่ระหว่างแม่น้ำ วังกับแม่น้ำยม ทิวเขาผีปันน้ำตะวันออก อยู่ระหว่างแม่น้ำยมกับแม่น้ำน่าน ทิวเขาหลวงพระบาง กั้นเขตแดนระหว่างไทย กับลาว ทิวเขาเหล่านี้ประกอบไปด้วยภูเขาใหญ่น้อยมากมาย เช่น ดอยอินทนนท์ ดอยขุนตาล ภูชี้ฟ้า ภูผาตั้ง และยังเป็นที่อยู่ อาศัยของชาวเขาเผ่าต่างๆ ได้แก่ กะเหรี่ยง ม้ง มูเซอ เย้า อีก้อ และลีซอ
ส่วนพื้นที่ราบบริเวณหุบเขาและแถบลุ่มแม่น้ำปิง วัง ยม น่าน ลุ่มน้ำกก และน้ำอิง มีความอุดมสมบูรณ์เหมาะแก่การ เพาะปลูกข้าว และพืชไร่ รวมทั้งไม้ผลหลากหลายชนิด
แม่น้ำ
แม่น้ำสายสำคัญในภาคเหนือ แบ่งออกเป็น 3 พวก ได้แก่
พวกที่ไหลจากเหนือลงใต้ ได้แก่ แม่น้ำปิง แม่น้ำแจ่ม แม่น้ำตื่น แม่น้ำงัด แม่น้ำกวง แม่น้ำทา แม่น้ำวัง แม่น้ำจาง แม่น้ำยม แม่น้ำน่าน และแม่น้ำปาด
พวกที่ไหลจากใต้ขึ้นเหนือ ได้แก่ แม่น้ำอิง แม่น้ำลาว แม่น้ำกก แม่น้ำจัน และแม่น้ำลี้
พวกที่ไหลไปลงทางด้านพม่า ได้แก่ แม่น้ำเมย แม่น้ำยวม และแม่น้ำปายซึ่งไหลบรรจบกับแม่น้ำสาละวิน

ลักษณะนิสัยของชาวเหนือสังเกตได้จากภาษาพูด ซึ่งเป็นภาษาไทยท้องถิ่นที่มีความไพเราะอ่อนหวาน แสดงถึงความ สุภาพอ่อนโยนในจิตใจ ความโอบอ้อมอารี และความเป็นมิตร
